About The Harambee Centre
About the Harambee Centre and Our Mission
The Harambee Centre is a Development Education Centre which promotes understanding and action on global issues to people in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Based in Cambridge, we provide resources, information and inspirational workshops to local schools, teachers and communities. The Harambee Centre registered as a charity in 1988.
What do we Want to Achieve?
We aim to empower local people to understand global issues from different perspectives and take action for positive change. We want to equip local people with the skills to examine global issues, rethink values and assumptions, and take responsibility for our choices and actions.
What we do
School and Youth Workshops
We run exciting and interactive workshops to build confidence in people to explore the global issues that affect us all as global citizens.
We also use art, music and games to help children understand global, environmental and development issues, and to develop their critical thinking skills. One of our projects, 'Global Voices', draws on our pool of volunteers from over twenty countries to teach children about cultural differences and similarities. We offer Continuing Professional Development (CPD) workshops as well as tailor-made workshops covering many topics. Our most popular include: Fair Trade, Refugee Issues, Water Issues and 'Introducing Ghana'.
Resource Centre
The Harambee Centre houses an impressive collection of over 1000 items on a wide range of global issues. Our resources can be used for all stages of the National Curriculum, the youth sector and general reference. They include: books, (including dual language), photo-packs, games, posters, maps, music, global artefacts, and information on development organisations.
Networks
We are constantly building and strengthening links with local, national and international organisations to promote Global Citizenship activities in our local area.
Training
We can train established and trainee teachers to practise global citizenship activities in schools. We frequently provide training for staff INSET.
Get Involved
If you want to volunteer, there are numerous ways to get involved which need not require a large commitment of time. For example, we are always glad to hear from local people with a strong connection to another country to take part in 'Global Voices'. We also need volunteers to work in our office on a multitude of tasks. Please look for current needs on this website and contact us for further details.
