Educating for a Global Future

Educating for a Global Future is an exciting national initiative to support secondary schools make progress in delivering the global dimension in the curriculum. Funded by Dfid the initiative is coordinated by Leeds DEC and being delivered in seven EES regions.

The Process

A training-based curriculum development approach will be offered to schools to support them develop, design and manage curricula. There will be opportunities for teachers to develop activities which enable students to
explore issues such as: Poverty Reduction and the Millennium Development Goals; Global Citizenship; and
Social Justice and Globalisation. These could be delivered in a wide variety of curriculum areas and
through cross-curricular themes and dimensions. A Global Dimension Self Evaluation Framework (SEF) to
help measure attitudinal change and schools’ progress in incorporating the global dimension in the curriculum is
an integral part of this initiative.

The Global Dimension can bring to your school:

  • Inspirational Global Citizenship teaching to help prepare young people to meet the challenges of the 21st century
  • Opportunities to develop a better understanding of Cultural Diversity and Equality
  • Opportunities to develop critical thinking and analytical skills through inter-active learning using cross-curricular themes and dimensions
  • Opportunities for students to develop new perspectives and develop emotional literacy through meaningful and relevant lessons which explore global issues in their own communities and contribute to the debate about national policy and action throughout their lives

Students - our ambassadors for change

With this national initiative, a ‘Global Action’ Programme for School Councils will offer mini-grants to schools to
help young people explore, practically, the contribution they can make towards securing their future in a world
that reflects social justice and equality for all. 

The Package:

• Opportunities for schools to participate in a dynamic curriculum development national initiative and to pilot
a Global Dimension SEF
• Support from development education professionals and lead educational consultants to explore
approaches for making the most of the global dimension in the new secondary curriculum
• Opportunities to be part of a national network of ‘Beacon Global Schools’ though seminars, conferences and CPD training and courses offered in your region
